ESBL resistance in enteric bacteria - proposed action plan

Compulsory notification of ESBL-producing bacteria under the Communicable Disease Act was introduced in Sweden in February 2007. Since then, the number of isolates carrying this resistance mechanism has increased steadily.

Due to Strama's directive concerning measures affecting human health, the initiative was taken in formulating a proposed action plan to combat the emergence and spread of ESBL resistance. The proposal is evidence-based and draws upon the experience of experts selected by public bodies and other stakeholders. The evidence base is available in a separate background document (Swedish only) that can be found on Strama's Swedish website.
