Enterobacteriaceae producing extended spectrum betalactamases (ESBL) were made notifiable by the laboratories from February 2007. A total of 2957 cases were notified in 2008. When comparing the second halves of 2007 and 2008, respectively, a 28% increase of ESBL cases was noted for 2008. Vancomycin resistant enterococci (VRE), have up til now been rare in Sweden. In 2008 there were 618 notified cases of VRE, almost 12 times more cases than 2007.
During 2008 the sales of antibiotics in Sweden decreased with 1.6 %. The decrease follows a series of years with rising use. Antibiotic consumption is still high in Sweden and especially among children and elderly. The use of antibiotics differs between the council. The use is greatest in big cities and theirs surroundings. In these areas more than one third of all children aged 0 to 6 years received at least one course of antibiotics in 2008.
