From July 1st 2010, Strama (the Swedish Strategic Programme against Antibiotic Resistance) is an advisory body with the remit to assist the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control in:
1) matters regarding antibiotic use and containment of antibiotic resistance
2) facilitating an interdisciplinary and locally approved working model, ensuring involvement by all relevant stakeholders including national and local authorities and non-profit organizations.
The chairman and members are elected by the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control. Strama collaborates in a network of local Strama-groups in the counties of Sweden.

Strama's history
Strama was founded in 1995 as a result of discussions between the Swedish Reference Group for Antibiotics (SRGA), the Medical Products Agency, the National Board of Health and Welfare, the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control and others. The primary objective was to create a decentralized organization in order to gain national recognition and to facilitate local surveillance activities and projects. Through the County Medical Officers for Communicable Diseases regional Strama groups were established in every county.
From 2000 Strama has received funding from the Swedish Government, via funds allocated for public health measures.
In September 2006, Strama was reorganized to become a collaborative body with the remit of working for interdiciplinary collaboration in issues related to safeguarding the possibility of effective use of antibiotics in human and veterinary bacterial infections. Strama was also assigned to initiate measures that primarily affect human health. The remit was specified in a directive issued by the Swedish Government and corresponds well with the aims that Strama has had since its inception in 1995.
